Sunday saw Arcosanti celebrate Piemas for the second straight year.  The holiday, created by foundry worker Chad Repp, is spent baking pies and brewing festive drinks to be consumed en masse after dinner, followed by a movie.

Repp created Piemas five years to be, “[A] holiday to just be together in a time of year with a lot of rushing around.  I was talking with a friend about how stressful the holiday season becomes, and she said what she looked forward to more than Christmas morning or the Thanksgiving meal was baking pies with her mother in preparation for them.  So I thought, ‘Hey, let’s just to that.'”  Repp brought the tradition to Arcosanti where he enlisted Ceramics worker Brian Thompson (seen here with Repp and, between them, “The King of Piemas”) to help him organize it.  “I love the convivial nature of it,” says Thompson, “I enjoy the synthesis of Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, all of which I’ve missed or will miss this year at Arcosanti.  Wholesome pies and a horror movie!”

Eighteen pies were baked by twelve participants, among them vegan, raw-food, gluten-free, and traditional versions, served in a packed bakery.  The stuffed crowd closed the night with a screening of the Finnish film Rare Exports.
