During the massive storm in January 2010, the water pressure created by the run-offs from the surrounding mesas broke the earth dam and left behind a trail of damage. The dam burst open and continuous rainfall ate away the bottom of the opening creating an even deeper gap.[picture by Sue Kirsch, text by Hildemar Cruz]
Throughout the years, numerous attempts were made to repair the dam although intermittent extreme weather conditions continued to damage it. Last week, repairs to the dam on the Cosanti Foundation property began.
Progress is steadily moving along. Rick the bulldozer operator has been servicing the dam for over 35 years. Rick and a colleague began to clear the damaged area. Gradually, they rebuilt the dam by gathering the moist dirt and compacting it down to create a secure structure.
