This is a special training program with bronze sculptor Cliff Hersted, who puts together Paolo Soleri Special Assemblies at Arcosanti. Paolo hand carves styrofoam pieces, which are sand cast into aluminum and bronze elements. These elements, combined with bells of various sizes, are then assembled into mobile sculptures.

Chieko sand cast each element of this, her first, completed Special Assembly. She also hand-carved and cast some of the connecting elements. The foundry crew had a special celebration to commemorate this completion, and Chieko christens the assembly with champagne. For more information on Soleri Special Assemblies, please consult the Cosanti web-site under Soleri Bells On-line, Special Assemblies.

Chieko is a second generation Arcosanti participant. This photo was taken during Arcosanti Alumni Japan Reunion in 1982 in Yokohama, Japan. The small child is Chieko with her father, alumnus Keiji Shimuzu. Kenji was part of the Arcosanti crew from November 1978 to August 1979. He attended a wood workshop and was part of the drafting crew. Keiji did interior wood work on the lab building, the machine shed and the Cosanti Gallery. He also did finishing work on the swimming pool, foundation work on the East Crescent, worked on the experimental greenhouse in camp and did some interior work in the Crafts III gallery.
