Tile-Making One-Day Experience at Cosanti

CREATE UNIQUE CERAMIC ART

In this hands-on class, you will learn the exceptional tile making and design process developed by The Cosanti Foundation and used every day by the artisans of Cosanti Originals to make our popular ceramic tiles. As a participant, you will have the opportunity to mold and imprint your own one-of-a-kind ceramic tile. This process involves using clay and water to create your tile, so come prepared to get your hands dirty.

SCHEDULE

10am: Introductory Tour

Join us as we show you Cosanti, a laboratory of experimentation in architecture and hand-made artcraft. We will show you the different structures and practices that Cosanti possesses, all while describing the history and theory behind this novel institution.

11am Forming Tiles
We will begin with the process of forming a clay slab using canvas and a roller, and then move on to sizing the slab where we will measure and cut the clay into tile pieces

12pm: Imprinting Tiles

The centerpiece of the day, our instructors will show you the main tools and techniques we use to imprint a design into the clay tile. We will further elaborate the style of our artwork, both within the Cosanti family of design as well as individual inspiration.

1pm: Group Photo and Salutation

In conclusion, all participants will be able to share this process together and see each other’s work before finishing. We will  take individual photos of each person with their tile as well as a group photo. After the class is finished, the clay tiles will be fired, lightly glazed, and then shipped to each person.

YOUR INSTRUCTOR
C.J. Milewski is a ceramicist at Cosanti in Paradise Valley. For nearly the last two years, she has been learning and developing her own style within our tile-making tradition. She has a background originally in education which she brings to workshops by integrating her art with education at Cosanti. She appreciates having a job that allows her to teach while also enhancing the inner artisan she aspires to be.
