Arcosanti’s 860+ acre property is rich in geologic and ethnographic history. Native
American Indians made many settlements in the area and some of the signs of their
presence still remain. Pictographs are to be found throughout the site and there
are the ruined remains of an ancient pueblo perched upon a mesa up the Agua Fria
wash. In this photo, Roger Tomalty explains to workshoppers some of the archaeological
methods, such as studying pot-sherds and examining fallen stone walls, to glean
clues from the past. Photo and text by Benjamin Ericson.
