Dr. J.B. Smith, Professor of Music and Coordinator of Percussion Studios at ASU School of Music, Tempe, visited Cosanti in Paradise Valley this week with students and fellow faculty. There, they selected a series of Soleri Windbells that will be featured in a December 4. 2014 concert in the Katzin Concert Hall at ASU.[photos and text by Cosanti Foundation President Jeff Stein]
The concert piece that ASU is preparing is entitled “Bell Air” by the German composer/percussionist Matthias Kaul. Here is a link to a YouTube video of an ensemble in Germany performing it on cowbells and hand bells:
The Soleri bells were chosen on the basis of tone, with the help of an iPhone App that registers musical pitch.
The windbell concert is Thursday, Dec. 4 2014 at 7:30 in Katzin Concert Hall in the Music Building at ASU.
It is free and open to the public. Free parking will be available in the Gammage Auditorium lot across the street from the music building.
