The Arcosanti Workshop

At Arcosanti, the unique and vibrant built environment is a living archive that displays the collective efforts of over 8,000 individual workshop participants and volunteers going back more than 5 decades. The Arcosanti Workshop program has resulted in the construction of both the Arcosanti and Cosanti sites as we know them today.

In 2019, the Workshop program continues to deliver dynamic experiences and educational opportunities for those people who want to become a part of the Arcosanti endeavor. Come and participate and add your name to the ever-growing list of international collaborators and builders!

Workshop starting dates: February 3rd, February 24th, March 17th, April 7th, June 9th, June 30th, September 15th, October 6th and October 27th.

Program Outline

Immersive

For 6 weeks workshop participants live, work, and learn in the unique built environments of Cosanti for the first week and Arcosanti for the next 5 weeks. At Arcosanti, participants will live amongst the community of around 70 full-time residents. This all takes place against the backdrop of 4,000 acres of undeveloped Arizona high desert.

Arcosanti hosts many events and visits from universities and other groups, making it a lively place year-round. Workshop participants will get the experience of living in this unique environment where they can get to know many new people, spend time hiking the Agua Fria river, crafting with wood, metal, and clay in our lab building, and enjoying a starlit sky at night.

Hands-On

Workshop participants give a full-time work effort each week in Construction, Utilities, Landscaping, and Maintenance. There are sometimes opportunities to work in other departments, such as Archives or the Cafe. Generally, participants should be ready to do what’s needed, but could expect to spend their time working on building renovations, preservation projects, and infrastructure upgrades. This work takes place at both Cosanti and Arcosanti, and participants will spend the entire first week working at Cosanti.

Educational

The educational component includes opportunities for learning-by-doing during construction and other work. Before the workshop participant arrives, they will receive required reading and preparation materials. Topics covered include Arcology theory, project history, site orientation, and more. Additionally, participants can expect weekly special educational sessions/lectures and some behind the scenes tours.

Lean

Accommodations at Arcosanti are simple and frugal. Workshop participants stay in dormitory-style housing shared with other workshop participants (various rooms can accommodate 2 to 8 people. There is minimal heating and no air conditioning!

Upgrades to guarantee a private room are sometimes available at an additional $150/week. If interested, indicate so on your workshop application and our staff will let you know what is available.

Tuition also includes three meals a day in our cafe, a continental breakfast, and buffet style lunch and dinner. We also have a small cash bar serving beer and wine most evenings during dinner.

Testimonials

The lectures on Arcology and the workshops on bell making have been engaging and intellectually stimulating. However; the most wonderful aspect of Arcosanti has been the welcoming community which has included me in activities and made me feel at home.

The workshop program allows you to lend your hands for a ew weeks’ worth of work, which is really quite small in the face of the near half-century of work that has been ongoing at Arcosanti, and in return you gain access to the total wealth of thinking that has been done here as well. It’s one hell of a bargain, with a wonderful community and a great view thrown in too.

Over the course of the past five weeks I have learned more about myself than I have in a year. The skills I’ve gained, friendships I’ve made, and the imprint this place has left on me will follow me always.
